Some Things are always right and true
With this up and coming election, I would like to ask everyone to comment on this post. Not just for political reasons, but for spiritual ones as well. I would like to hear how you define TRUTH. Truth of this life, of the spiritual realm and how it impacts what judgements you make in your life.
How do we know it's true? What guidelines can we use in our lives to prove it's true? Do they have to be written or are they simply something we have known and understood since childhood? How can we know the truth if scholars cannot even agree on what truth is?
(I had this great story of what I've experienced about truth, but I would like to hear it from you, so I deleted it. I will comment on my experience in another post. I will say that the Catechism of the Catholic Church has a lot to say on the matter.)

desert dreamer, I was at a meeting at my parish the other night, right after I had read your post for the first time. We opened with a little prayer that reminded me of the questions you were asking:
"Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, faith in your word is the way to wisdom, and to ponder your divine plan is to grow in the truth. Open our eyes to your deeds, our ears to the sound of your call, so that our every act may increase our sharing in the life you have offered us."
It reminded me of the importance of our striving for union with the Lord, that we might be able to enter more and more into Divine Truth, and that the more we can do this, the more intuitively we will recognize what is false.

Now, with that being said...do I continue to do false things? Do I continue with partial truths? Where do we draw the line at too far from the truth as we do sometimes in voting?
It's not God Who told us it's our DUTY to vote --the State says that. Jesus said "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.." I'm figuring that means house taxes, because there isn't any way out of that and income tax.. I cannot vote for a warmonger nor an choice-ist. I can't. And won't. I have changed my party affiliation to "Undeclared"

This really is a tough one, desert dreamer, and I face the same dilemma in my country when it's time to vote. I understand H's point of view, and I honestly don't know what is the "correct" choice morally or spiritually (to vote or to abstain). I would like to know myself, if there are any moral theologians out there reading. But I do feel a strong duty to vote, and so when both, or all, parties are equally reprehensible to me on certain issues, I usually end up voting for the party that I think will do more to help the poor, and from a local point of view as well. I think our world will not, and cannot change, unless hearts are changed, and I always try to remember that Jesus never taught the multitudes, He never tried to enlighten them, or change their hearts, until He had fed them. So I try to remember that, and then I ask Him to forgive me if I'm making a huge mistake, and I vote for the party I think will do its best to feed, clothe and shelter the poor. Personal opinion only, and would dearly love to hear other opinions on this.
Truth? *sigh* It's tough to define truth by the world when there is so much corruption,deceit and selfishness.
Many things I do not feel right about, or agree with in myself. But for me, I have to go back to God's Word. It is the only viable authority of Truth.
